One common problem that can arise with modern-day transmissions is a malfunctioning shift solenoid. Now, I know that sounds like a technical term straight out of a sci-fi flick, but stick with me here. Shift solenoids are basically tiny valves that help control the flow of transmission fluid in order to make your car shift gears. If they go haywire, you might experience harsh gear changes or a complete failure to shift gears at all.
If you ever notice that your gear changes feel particularly rough or that your transmission won’t shift into gear at all, it could be a sign that your shift solenoid is on the fritz. One surefire way to tell is if you see a P0974 diagnostic trouble code saved in your ECU. This is one of the more serious codes out there, so if you do happen to see it, don’t ignore it.
Now, you might be wondering what causes shift solenoids to go bad in the first place. Unfortunately, it’s usually just regular wear and tear. That being said, there are a few things you can do to help prevent a premature shift solenoid breakdown.
