Shift Your Worries Away: How to Keep Your Modern-Day Transmission in Top Shape

Dear Mike,

I just bought a used car with a modern-day transmission. While I’m enjoying the smooth ride, I’m a bit worried about potential maintenance issues down the line. What are some common issues with modern-day transmissions that I should be aware of? Any tips for keeping my transmission in top shape?

Thanks,
Aurora

Dear Aurora,

First of all, congrats on your new ride! I hope you’re loving every minute of it. However, I do understand your concerns regarding maintenance, so let’s talk about common transmission issues and how to prevent them.

One common problem that can arise with modern-day transmissions is a malfunctioning shift solenoid. Now, I know that sounds like a technical term straight out of a sci-fi flick, but stick with me here. Shift solenoids are basically tiny valves that help control the flow of transmission fluid in order to make your car shift gears. If they go haywire, you might experience harsh gear changes or a complete failure to shift gears at all.

If you ever notice that your gear changes feel particularly rough or that your transmission won’t shift into gear at all, it could be a sign that your shift solenoid is on the fritz. One surefire way to tell is if you see a P0974 diagnostic trouble code saved in your ECU. This is one of the more serious codes out there, so if you do happen to see it, don’t ignore it.

Now, you might be wondering what causes shift solenoids to go bad in the first place. Unfortunately, it’s usually just regular wear and tear. That being said, there are a few things you can do to help prevent a premature shift solenoid breakdown.

First and foremost, make sure you’re keeping up with regular transmission fluid changes. Fresh fluid helps keep everything running smoothly and can prevent buildup from causing damage to components like shift solenoids.

Secondly, if you notice any signs of transmission trouble, don’t hesitate to bring your car into a reputable repair shop like ours. We can diagnose the issue and nip it in the bud before it turns into a much bigger problem.

Finally, and most importantly, don’t neglect your car’s owner’s manual. It might not be the most thrilling read, but it does contain valuable information about proper maintenance schedules and procedures. Following the recommended intervals for things like fluid changes and other maintenance can go a long way towards keeping your transmission (and your whole car) running smoothly for years to come.

Well, Aurora, I hope that helps put your mind at ease a bit. Remember, regular maintenance is key to preventing transmission issues and keeping your car running like a dream. And if you ever do run into any trouble, you know where to find us. Cheers!
